With SISEU’s help in matchmaking partners like Singapore Logistics Association, NTUC LearningHub co-launched a series of SPUR-funded training courses fulfilling the logistics industry’s training needs, and benefitting some 180,000 workers.
Mr PH Tan, President, Singapore Industrial and Services Employees’ Union (SISEU)
NTUC LearningHub Private Limited (LHUB®) was incorporated on 1 August 2004. LHUB’s primary task is to improve the lifelong employability of our workers by upgrading their skills and competencies, as well as giving them the right mindset to meet the job challenges of a fast-evolving economy.
With over 700,000 workers trained to date, LHUB® plays a key role in fulfilling the Labour Movement’s vision of helping workers help themselves through lifelong learning.
Today, LHUB® is by far the largest Continuing Education and Training (CET) Centre operating under Singapore Workforce Development Agency’s (WDA) Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) framework. We continue to position ourselves as a leader and a key player in the continuous upgrading of the Singapore workforce.
In 2008, we awarded over 220,000 individual certifications through our courses, a ten-fold increase since our registration in 2004.
From the launch of the Skills Programme for Upgrading and Resilience (SPUR) till end March 2009, LHUB® has trained over 20,000 workers under the scheme, making us the leading choice among workers for skills upgrading in this downturn. This represents a significant portion of the 43,000 signups for SPUR-funded courses that WDA has garnered over the same period. These workers are now better positioned and will benefit from the eventual economic recovery.
Providing training for everyone
LHUB® also works together with employers to identify and meet training needs. Having worked with over 10,000 organisations to date, we offer training courses to both rank-and-file workers as well as professionals, managers, executives, and technicians (PMETs).
In addition to offering the largest range of courses for rank-and-file workers, we continue to grow our range of courses for PMETs. This past year, LHUB® was awarded the Microsoft Gold Certified Partner for Information Worker Solutions (Learning Solutions), and the Prometric Gold Partner Award for Professional Certification, greatly enhancing our value to workers and organisations.
Looking to the future
As part of our growth plans in the coming year, we will be doubling our SPUR training capacity to cater to the anticipated surge in demand for SPUR training, fuelled largely by the Labour Movement’s push to upgrade our worker’s skills during this downturn. We will be investing in two new training locations, in NTUC Trade Union House and Mountbatten, due to be ready by July 2009, bringing in more than 50 additional classrooms to support SPUR.
LHUB® is forging strategic partnerships with organisations like Nanyang Technological University, polytechnics, local industry associations and unions to help us enrich the range of training courses we can offer. This will give our trainees stronger industry acceptance and enhance the value of LHUB’s courses.
Over the next 12 months, LHUB® will be looking into providing vocational training beyond Singapore’s borders in countries such as China, India and Vietnam.
